Prayer after sermon: July 20, 2014…

Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties;
And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23-24

O our Holy Father and our God, we know deep in our hearts, O God, that we are not yet like Your Son. We know, each of us, that there is a seemingly infinite way to go. Yet we trust You, O God, because You have told us through Your apostle and through Your Scriptures that You are faithful to do it.

We pray, O God, search our hearts as only You can. Search our hearts as only You know. And, indeed, O God, shape us, write Your law on our hearts, that we might love You, that we might love the neighbor…and that those things, written on our hearts, would indeed keep our feet forever on Your pathways everlasting.

Lord we pray this because we know that You are powerful to do it. We pray this because we know that You have given us Your Son, Jesus Christ, and if You would not withhold Him from us, You would not withhold from us any good thing. And Your word tells us that this is a good thing, O God.

So Father, we pray, be about the business of our hearts…and make us like Your Son.

Father, all these things in Christ’s holy name we pray.

Amen
