Sunday morning thoughts…

From that time began Jesus to shew to his disciples that it is necessary for him to go away to Jerusalem, and to suffer many things from the elders, and chief priests, and scribes, and to be put to death, and the third day to rise. (Matthew 16:21 Young’s Literal Translation)

I use Young’s because of the translation of the Greek dei, an odd little verb that means “it is necessary.” Most translations say “He must…” That implies that it is something about Jesus that drives Him to Jerusalem. If, instead, it says “It is necessary for Him…”, we are compelled to ask the question of whose necessity it is. The answer is that it is Yahweh’s purpose, but my necessity. If I am to be forgiven of my sin and reconciled to Yahweh, it is necessary that Jesus goes to Jerusalem./THB/BHS
