Congregational Prayer: December 1, 2013…First Advent…

Our Holy Father and our God, we come to You this day in thankfulness. We are thankful, O God, that Jesus has come to us. There was nothing in us that was lovely. Like all of fallen mankind we were lost in our sins, and our every thought was evil all the time. Yet in Your great mercy You were faithful to Your promises to deal with sin, to crush the head of the Satan-serpent and free us from his wrath and power. We thank You, O God, that you have loved us and shown that love to us in such a way, that while we were yet sinners and enemies You sent Your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ to bear the penalty for our sins and the sins of His whole church, that we might be reconciled to You.

We pray, O Father, that by Holy Spirit our hearts and minds would be constantly renewed, that we might become ever more like Jesus and ever more a glory to You. Conform our minds to Christ, conform our hearts to Christ, conform our wills to Christ’s, that the family resemblance of the family of God would be seen upon us. And that not to our glory, but to the glory of the Living God alone.

By Holy Spirit make us ever more thankful people, ever more people of praise, ever more people of worship.

Father, we come to You in thanksgiving and praise, and we come to You in petition. Hear our prayers, O God.

[Congregational Concerns]

And Father, as we continue, please superintend this by Holy Spirit. Let not what proceeds from our mouths or our lives be the precepts of men, but only worship in spirit, truth and beauty. As we come to Christ’s table, open our eyes and ears that we might hear and understand what is spoken to us this day.

All this we pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

Amen
