Denatured Christ…

A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household! Therefore do not fear them. For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known. Matthew 10:24-26

There isn’t a one of us who does not bridle at the idea, or the reality, that there is somebody who can tell us what to do. Much moreso the City of Man, which thinks that the Jesus of the Bible is, indeed, the supreme evil. The mere reality of His name, “God Saves” carries with it the reality that there is something to be saved from, and they hate that. Out of that hate they have ‘denatured’ Christ, scrubbed Him clean of the harshness, removed all of his hard edges, and made him into a cute baby in a manger, the great teacher of that most soft and loving of speeches, the Sermon on the Mount, somebody who lived a good, even exemplary life…and if He really died on the cross, died a senseless and meaningless death. The City of Man can live with a Jesus like that.

But if we, Christians, are true to what we believe, if we preach Christ crucified and risen, Judge and Hope, and what He really taught about us, our abject need for a Savior…then the City of man will hate us, because they cannot denature us.
