When Jesus confronts the world…

When Jesus confronts the world, his authority soon emerges as one of the crucial and most disputed storm centers. This is not an accidental result: if our sin is at root a defiance of God’s authority, a deeply-rooted self-centeredness at enmity with God and his claims, and in love with ephemeral dreams of autonomy, it cannot be surprising that when Jesus confronts the world his authority, the authority of God himself, soon erupts as one of the focal points of debate.

This one out of the archive came up for somebody today. Excellent thoughts, as Incarnation and birth of the Christ is an insertion of God’s authority into a world that doesn’t want it. It ain’t all cute, what’s going on in that manger, folks.
