The essence of discernment…

What Christ is calling for is discernment; and the essence of discernment is knowing that simple rules cannot be expected to crank out an infallible answer.

Don Carson

This is from Carson’s little exposition of Matthew 5-10, particularly as regards 7:6, the prohibition from ‘casting pearls to dogs or swine.’ But its application is much broader, reaching across the whole of the Scriptures. So much of the Christian life is finding the path between two commands…not letting earthly things command our attention, whether by focusing on our abundance or lack thereof…being neither judgmental nor undiscerning…you name it.
