THE illness…

He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with griefsickness.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
Isaiah 53:3

Surely He has borne our griefssicknesses
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
Isaiah 53:4

Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him;
He has put Him to griefsickness.
When You make His soul an offering for sin,
He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand.
Isaiah 53:10

But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
Isaiah 53:5

I want to ask you a question. What is THE illness? The Susan G. Komen Foundation thinks that THE illness is breast cancer, right? There’s nothing that kills more people in this country than cancer and cardiac failure, right? And there are however many different organizations that think that they are the ones who are trying to get a stranglehold on THE illness, on some physical infirmity.

And then, we can go a little further afield. Let’s go to our friends the secular humanists. And what do they think THE illness is? Well…tolerant intolerance, as opposed to intolerant tolerance, is THE illness. What the Bible says about homosexuality is THE illness. What the Bible says about fornication, or abortion…that’s THE illness. What the Bible says about ‘me,’ that’s THE illness. A God Who made me and can tell me what is right and wrong…that’s THE illness. A Jesus Christ who died for my sins, because I need that…that’s THE illness.

Brothers and sisters, my brother who is dying of ALS, who wrote to us that epistle of encouragement that we read this morning…he knows what THE illness is. He knows that THE illness is sin. He knows that his Faithful Savior, Jesus Christ, has died for his sins. And he knows that…here in the sweetness of his latter days, as he prepares to go to his Savior. And you can read this letter and know the joy that my brother feels.

Brothers and sisters in Christ…that’s the reason I told you to take pen or pencil and cross out the word “griefs” and put in “sickness” or “illness,” because that’s what it is. It’s the thing that brings death. It’s the thing that brings death from ALS. It’s the thing that brings death from cancer, or from heart failure.

Surely He has borne your illness…if you are in Christ Jesus.

Thanks be to God!
